A while ago, River proposed the idea of writing a blog post dedicated to audio tags. As we've ventured deeper into this topic our learning journey has revealed many insights, prompting me to share our discoveries. This is a domain we've extensively explored, yet we feel there's still much to uncover.
What is an Audio Tag?
Before we proceed let's establish a basic understanding of audio tags. In simple terms, think of an audio tag as an audible watermark. So when you watch a movie produced by MGM and you hear the lion's roar that identifies the production company. Or you put on the TV and the Netflix "ta-dum" sound as the streaming service boots up and you recognise subconsciously that Netflix is on. Or you hear the McDonald's "I'm lovin' it" jingle in their advertisements..? All these are examples of audio tags.
Also known as audio metadata or ID3 tags, audio tags are information nuggets embedded within audio files. They detail essential aspects of the audio content, assisting users in managing, categorising, and navigating their audio collections more efficiently. The data can vary from the title, artist, album, track number, genre, to even artwork associated with the audio file.
While their use is prevalent in music files, audio tags also play an indispensable role in podcasting and other audio content types. They empower listeners with access to crucial information like the episode title, podcast name, and detailed descriptions, thereby facilitating a seamless browsing experience.
The Importance of Audio Tags
You might wonder "Why are audio tags significant?" It's a question we explored in detail. As budding podcast hosts, we decided it's crucial to lay a solid foundation right from the beginning. Why not harness the knowledge we've acquired to enhance our venture?
Is it crucial for a podcast that might not even gain traction initially? We'll leave that to you to decide. However, we decided to develop an audio tag for our own podcast after observing its effective use in several popular podcasts.
A familiar sound, such as an audio tag, puts the listener in a comfort zone, confirming they've tuned into the intended content. It's akin to a warm cup of tea or a well-loved melody—soothing and reassuring.
Our Audio Tag: A Work in Progress
An audio tag can range from a singular sound to a montage of sounds that, when listened to, evoke a specific brand's essence.
Part of our mission in creating this podcast is to provide an educational platform for River. As such our exploration into audio tags forms a valuable part of this learning journey.
Who could've imagined that I'd be teaching River about audio tags when we first decided to launch a podcast? This is the fascinating aspect of home education—it's a constantly evolving journey. These so-called tangents end up imparting valuable knowledge about the world around us and provide a deeper understanding of ourselves and each other.
Compared to the traditional school system's rigid structure that emphasises data memorisation, home education's fluidity offers a more holistic learning approach. Learning, in my mind, transcends simple memorisation - it's an immersive experience.
In our quest to create our audio tag, River and I have discussed numerous elements that could feature within it. We've thought about incorporating a 'whooshing' sound to symbolise our adventures or a few guitar notes to represent River's passion. We've also considered integrating ambient sounds like the grinding of coffee beans or elements of nature. As of now, we're still brainstorming ideas.
